Reducing our Carbon Footprint

This practice is delighted to be signed up to the Green Impact for Health Toolkit and is actively taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint. The climate emergency is also a health emergency, and health care in the UK contributes 5.4% of the UK’s carbon emissions. We need to enhance the health of our current population without compromising the health of future generations, and this means operating within the sustainable boundaries of the planet. Fortunately most of the solutions for the planet also make our health better – for example eating a mainly plant-based diet, engaging in active travel and exercise in nature, avoiding smoking, reducing pollution etc all enhance our health and reduce our need for medications, with further benefits to the NHS, your health and the carbon footprint of healthcare. Take a look at www.greenerpractice.co.uk to learn more about this.

GP Earnings

NHS England require that the net earnings of doctors engaged in the practice is publicised and the required disclosure is shown below.

However, it should be noted that the prescribed method for calculating earnings is potentially misleading because it takes no account of how much time doctors spend working in the practice and should not be used to for any judgement about GP earnings, nor to make any comparisons with other practices.

The average earnings for GPs working in the Hetton Group Practice in the last financial year ending in 2020/21 was £89,934 before taxation and National Insurance.

This is for 1 full time GP, 6 part time GPs and 3 locum GPs who worked in the practice for more than 6 months.

Failing to attend / failing to cancel appointments

From Nov 2020 to the end of Feb 2021 419 appointments were wasted due to patients failing to attend / failing to cancel their appointment.

Please note: unwanted appointments can be cancelled in the following ways:

  • Face to face (GP surgery)
  • By telephone
  • Cancelling via text when you receive an appointment reminder
  • Cancel via ‘patient access’ – (online appointment booking)

Please always cancel unwanted appointments as they can be used by other patients who need to see a GP/Nurse
